About This Episode
Mental health, loneliness, and social connection are becoming some of the biggest challenges facing society today.

In this live episode of Policy Prescriptions, recorded at SXSW in Austin, Gary Jacobs, Author of The Zen Lobbyist: A Mindful Approach to Transforming Healthcare, sits down with legendary musician Neil Giraldo and Healthsperien’s Founding Principal & Managing Partner, Andrew MacPherson, to break down the loneliness crisis, mental health, and how music and human connection can shape public policy. This conversation explores how social isolation affects brain chemistry, why loneliness is rising across the country, and how music, storytelling, and community can help solve one of the most urgent public health issues today.

Neil Giraldo shares how childhood anxiety and depression shaped his life, and how music became the tool that pulled him out of isolation. Andrew MacPherson explains how those same experiences are now influencing real policy conversations in Washington, including funding for community programs focused on social connection. If you are interested in mental health, leadership, public policy, or personal growth, this episode gives you a clear look at how connection drives change.

In this episode, you will learn:
  • How loneliness and social isolation impact mental health
  • Why social connection is now a public health priority
  • How music works as a form of therapy and emotional regulation
  • Why storytelling is more effective than data in shaping policy
  • How community spaces like music venues, parks, and events improve well-being
  • What policymakers are doing to address the loneliness crisis

They explain how lobbying shapes healthcare, influences legislation, and impacts millions of lives. From the Medicare hospice benefit to modern health policy strategy, this conversation reveals how real change happens behind the scenes.

You’ll also learn:

  • Why lobbying is a core part of democracy
  • How policy decisions are influenced before meetings even happen
  • The role of storytelling, data, and trust in shaping legislation
  • Why access alone doesn’t drive results
  • How everyday Americans influence policy more than they think

This episode challenges the narrative around lobbying and shows how education, advocacy, and engagement drive real outcomes.

If you care about healthcare, policy, or how decisions get made in Washington, this is a must-watch.
